A carpenter is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing after defrauding a graduate of N628,000.

A 37-year-old carpenter, Damilare Olaniyi was on Monday brought before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a fresh graduate of N628,000 on the pretext of building chicken cages for him.

The accused, whose address is unknown, is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Eigbejiale, the accused committed the offences on Sept. 5, 2016 in Ibara, the business hub of Abeokuta.
Eigbejiale said the accused obtained N628, 000 from the complainant, Mr Ajewole Babatope,  on the agreement that he would build cages to enable him start poultry farm.
“The accused failed to do the job and converted the money to personal use.”
Eigbejiale said the complainant, a fresh graduate and entrepreneur, had obtained a loan from the bank to start a poultry business.
The offences contravened Sections 390 (a) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
The accused entered a `not guilty’ plea.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Oriyomi Sofowora, granted the accused N250, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until April 18 for trial.
